Université de Montréal Carabins Claim Second Vanier Cup Victory

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies entered the 60th Vanier Cup aiming to secure their first national championship in almost thirty years. Playing at Regina’s Mosaic Stadium in front of nearly 9,000 supporters, the Huskies had a chance to showcase Saskatchewan’s football prowess and claim the national title, a feat not achieved since 1998.

However, the Université de Montréal Carabins emerged triumphant, defeating the Huskies by a score of 30-16. This victory marked the Carabins’ second Vanier Cup win in three years, solidifying their football program as one of the country’s strongest.

Throughout the game, the Carabins maintained the lead, with rookie quarterback Pepe Gonzalez’s stellar performance dismantling the Huskies’ defense, particularly in the second half. Despite the loss, Huskies quarterback Jake Farrell acknowledged the team’s resilience in the face of adversity, emphasizing their unity and determination.

Head coach Scott Flory commended his players for overcoming various challenges during the season, expressing pride in their efforts despite falling short in the final. Running back Ryker Frank highlighted the team’s bond as a key factor in their journey to the national stage.

For departing players like linebacker Seth Hundeby and receiver Daniel Wiebe, the game marked the end of their university football careers. Despite the outcome, they expressed gratitude for the experiences and camaraderie shared with their teammates. Hundeby affirmed his continued support for the team, embodying the sentiment of “Once a Husky, always a Husky.”

As the Huskies reflect on their Vanier Cup loss, they find solace in the unity, resilience, and dedication that defined their season. The team’s unwavering spirit and commitment to each other resonate as they look towards the future, knowing that their bond transcends wins and losses.
