A decade has passed since The Tragically Hip’s farewell performance in Kingston, Ontario, but guitarist Paul Langlois admits he is still coming to terms with it. Reflecting on the last show in an interview with CBC’s Eli Glasner on ‘The National,’ Langlois expressed gratitude for the band’s impact on fans.
The emotional evening saw lead singer Gord Downie bid adieu to a packed audience at Kingston’s Rogers K-Rock Centre, now known as Slush Puppi Place. Downie’s heartfelt rendition of iconic hits like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” marked the end of an era, leaving both fans and the band in tears.
Having released 13 studio albums since their inception in 1984, The Tragically Hip concluded their touring days in 2016 with a final show in their hometown on August 20, 2016. Downie’s battle with terminal brain cancer, diagnosed in December 2015, tragically led to his passing a year later at the age of 53.
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the band’s last performance, CBC will rebroadcast ‘The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration’ this Saturday. The retelling of this significant event aims to honor the band’s legacy and Downie’s enduring impact on Canadian music.
Despite the outpouring of support and appreciation from fans, guitarist Rob Baker views the event not as a celebration but as a somber remembrance. The final show marked the end of a cherished career for the band, leaving a lasting impact on all involved.
Langlois recalled his mixed emotions leading up to the final performance, feeling uneasy until Downie’s arrival at the soundcheck. Downie’s infectious optimism and excitement for the show lifted Langlois’s spirits, transforming his apprehension into anticipation for the grand finale.
Throughout the farewell tour, the band members feared Downie’s health might hinder his performance, but to their surprise, the singer appeared to grow stronger with each show. Reflecting on the unexpected magnitude of their last concert, Langlois admitted that the band had underestimated the profound impact it would have on fans nationwide.
As fans continue to cherish The Tragically Hip’s music, Baker and Langlois affirmed that the band will not reunite. However, they released a new album titled ‘Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,’ featuring recordings from their final tour. Baker emphasized the band’s forward-thinking nature and the healing power of music in times of grief and reflection.
