American skiing sensation Mikaela Shiffrin is gearing up for her upcoming races in Colorado next weekend as the current leader of the overall World Cup standings, having clinched victories in two consecutive events.
Shiffrin showcased her dominance in another slalom competition on Sunday, securing a second consecutive win in the discipline at the start of the Olympic season. Braving the sunny yet chilly conditions in the Austrian Alps, she clocked the fastest time in both runs, finishing with a remarkable time of 1 minute 48.11 seconds, 1.23 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Lara Colturi from Italy representing Albania.
The duo also claimed the top two positions in the season’s inaugural slalom race in Finland a week prior, with Shiffrin leading both runs and triumphing by 1.66 seconds. Expressing her satisfaction with her performance, Shiffrin described it as some of her best slalom skiing to date, achieving her 66th World Cup win in slalom and her 103rd overall victory, setting new records in both categories.
Swiss slalom world champion Camille Rast trailed behind with a combined time of 1:49.52, finishing 1.41 seconds off the pace in third place, mirroring the podium results from the previous year’s race in Gurgl.
Shiffrin’s upcoming challenges include a giant slalom on Saturday and a slalom race the following day in Copper Mountain, serving as the usual training ground for the U.S. ski team.
During Sunday’s competition, Shiffrin initially held a slim lead of 31-100ths of a second over Colturi after the first run but extended her advantage significantly with an aggressive final leg. Reflecting on her performance, Shiffrin acknowledged the need to push herself to the limit, especially in the challenging conditions. She emphasized the importance of persevering despite the competition’s fierce nature.
In the overall standings, both Shiffrin and Colturi now occupy the top two positions following three events. Shiffrin’s teammate Paula Moltzan secured the third spot after finishing fifth in Sunday’s race. The season commenced with the giant slalom in October, won by Austrian skier Julia Scheib, where Moltzan claimed second place and Shiffrin finished fourth.
Shiffrin’s focus on slalom and giant slalom disciplines this season stems from her preparation for the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics in February, aiming to replicate her past successes in these events. The Canadian contingent saw Laurence St-Germain achieve the top Canadian finish, placing 11th out of 26 participants.
As Shiffrin’s main competitor in the absence of Petra Vlhova, who is recovering from a knee injury, Colturi continues to impress with her remarkable performances, aiming to emulate Shiffrin’s excellence on the slopes. Colturi, hailing from Italy, started her World Cup journey for Albania at the age of 16, overcoming setbacks to establish herself as a formidable contender in the skiing circuit.
The competitive spirit between Shiffrin and Colturi sets the stage for intense battles in future races, with skiing enthusiasts eagerly anticipating their showdowns on the alpine slopes.
