“Poaching Probe at Point Pelee: Water Birds Targeted”

Parks Canada is currently looking into a suspected case of poaching involving water birds at Point Pelee National Park. The incident is believed to have occurred between 8 p.m. on April 23 and 8 a.m. on April 24 within the marsh area of the park. The authorities are urging individuals who may have information regarding the illegal discharge of firearms, or who have noticed any suspicious activity or vehicles in the area during that timeframe, to come forward.

According to a statement released by the government agency, poaching is a grave offense under the Canada National Parks Act. Officials are particularly interested in obtaining any dashcam footage captured at the park entrance, marsh boardwalk, or Blue Heron day use areas during the specified period.

Debra Parker, a frequent visitor to Point Pelee, expressed deep concern over the incident, mentioning that a female swan was likely targeted based on photographs taken by a friend who witnessed the aftermath and reported it to park authorities. Melissa Hargreaves, another local visitor, shared her experience of observing the nesting swan peacefully the day before the unfortunate event.

The poaching act has been described as “awful” by Hargreaves, who hopes for the perpetrator to be apprehended and penalized to the fullest extent of the law. The impact of the incident on the wildlife and the emotional response from visitors, such as Wallaceburg resident Larry Strung, who captured images of the swans near the boardwalk, highlights the distress caused by such actions.

The community within and around Point Pelee National Park is shocked by the incident, with concerns raised about the well-being of the remaining swans and the repercussions of disrupting their habitat. The local authorities are actively investigating the matter and seeking cooperation from the public to help bring the responsible party to justice.
