CIA traitor Aldrich Ames dies at 84 in Maryland prison

Aldrich Ames, a traitor to the CIA who exposed Western intelligence assets to the Soviet Union and Russia, has passed away at the age of 84 in a Maryland prison. The U.S. Bureau of Prisons confirmed his death without disclosing the cause. Ames, a long-term CIA employee, confessed to receiving $2.5 million from Moscow in exchange for classified American information from 1985 until his arrest in 1994. His disclosures included the identities of 10 Russian officials and one eastern European spy working for the U.S. or U.K., as well as details on spy satellite operations and eavesdropping techniques. These actions led to the execution of Western agents and significantly hindered the CIA’s operations.

Despite expressing remorse for his actions, Ames was sentenced to life in prison without parole for espionage and tax evasion. His wife, Rosario, also faced charges for aiding his espionage activities and received a 63-month sentence. Ames claimed his betrayal was driven by financial difficulties, downplaying the impact of his actions on national security. He admitted to spying for monetary gain, understanding the consequences of his actions when he was apprehended.

Before his arrest, Ames lived a lavish lifestyle but spent his remaining years behind bars. He began his betrayal while working at the CIA’s headquarters in Virginia, later continuing his espionage activities in Rome and Washington. Ames’s actions coincided with those of FBI agent Robert Hanssen, who was caught in 2001 for selling secrets to Moscow. Hanssen passed away in prison in 2023.
