New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd was critically wounded in a shooting in midtown Manhattan early Sunday, as reported by several news sources. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. outside a business on West 38th Street near 7th Avenue, per the New York Police Department. A 29-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical but stable condition. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
While the police did not disclose the victim’s identity, various news outlets indicated that the injured individual was Kris Boyd. The Jets spokesperson stated, “We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will not provide further comments at this time.” Boyd’s agent has not responded to inquiries about the incident.
Boyd, who joined the Jets this season but has not played due to a shoulder injury that required surgery, was placed on the injured reserve list in August. He was expected to play a key role in the team’s special teams under new coach Aaron Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Boyd sustained the injury during a training camp practice on August 2 and was escorted off the field for medical evaluation.
Known for his special teams prowess during his previous NFL seasons, including his time with the Houston Texans, Boyd drew attention during a playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs for his exuberant celebration after a forced fumble on a kickoff.
Teammates took to social media on Sunday to request prayers for Boyd’s recovery and well-being. Linebacker Jermaine Johnson urged everyone to send prayers to Boyd and his family, while defensive tackle Harrison Phillips asked for divine intervention and strength for Boyd’s family during this challenging time.
