Chrystia Freeland to Resign as MP, Takes Ukrainian Role

Former Liberal cabinet minister Chrystia Freeland has announced her intention to resign as a member of Parliament this Friday, signaling the conclusion of an era within the party. The prominent MP confirmed on Monday her acceptance of a voluntary advisory role with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, disclosing her plans to exit Canadian politics in the near future.

In a social media post just two days later, Freeland informed that she had informed the Speaker of her decision to vacate her seat by the end of the week. She expressed her commitment to supporting Canada and the people of Ukraine while highlighting her lifelong dedication to the Ukrainian cause.

Having Ukrainian roots, Freeland served as deputy prime minister from 2019 to 2024 and became the first female finance minister in Canada’s history. She has been a vocal critic of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. Representing the University-Rosedale riding in downtown Toronto since 2015, she previously held the same position in a riding she won back in 2013.

The Conservative party has called for Freeland’s immediate resignation, criticizing her acceptance of an advisory role for a foreign government while still serving as an MP. The party’s ethics critic, Michael Barrett, raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest and the prioritization of interests.

Although the Conflict of Interest Act prohibits certain activities for public office holders in Canada, such as outside employment and paid consulting, it does not specifically address advising a foreign government. Freeland stated that she sought guidance from the federal ethics commissioner and followed his recommendations.

Originally planning to resign before taking up the advisory role with Zelenskyy, Freeland’s announcement was accelerated by the Ukrainian side. She was approached by Zelenskyy during a visit on December 22 and subsequently discussed the opportunity with Prime Minister Mark Carney on December 24. Carney had previously appointed her as Canada’s special representative for Ukraine’s reconstruction, a role she is relinquishing.

Upon her official resignation, a byelection will be triggered for the Toronto seat, traditionally considered safe for the Liberals. Freeland has been a prominent figure in the Liberal Party and played a crucial role in various government initiatives, including the renegotiation of the North American trade pact and managing the country’s finances during the COVID-19 crisis.

Freeland’s office has confirmed her upcoming relocation to the United Kingdom to assume the role of CEO at the Rhodes Trust educational charity, starting on July 1.
