“Cascadia Seaweed Launches Biorefinery for Sustainable Agriculture”

A B.C. company is set to launch a new biorefinery in Port Edward, near Prince Rupert, focusing on utilizing seaweed for agricultural advancement. Cascadia Seaweed plans to convert locally sourced kelp and seaweed into a liquid biostimulant that aids farmers in improving crop yields and resilience to environmental stresses. CEO Michael Williamson highlighted the nutrient-rich waters of British Columbia’s northern region as ideal for cultivating high-quality seaweed, leading to the production of effective biostimulants.

The biostimulants, when applied to plants either through soil incorporation or foliar spray, enhance nutrient absorption efficiency, promoting healthier growth and soil quality. This innovative project is expected to create various job opportunities, contributing to the local economy. The company repurposed a former fish processing facility for seaweed processing, benefiting from its convenient location near the Port of Prince Rupert and rail access for international and domestic product distribution.

Established in 2019 on Vancouver Island, Cascadia Seaweed’s expansion to Port Edward marks a strategic move for exporting to the U.S., particularly California and the Midwest. With a dedicated team of technicians, engineers, harvesters, and scientists, the company aims to commence full operations at the new plant in the coming months, driving advancements in sustainable agriculture using seaweed-derived solutions.
