“Buddy Check Coffee Sessions Foster Camaraderie Among Canadian Veterans”

Every second Wednesday in the rural town of Manotick in south Ottawa, Canadian Armed Forces veterans gather at the Royal Canadian Legion for coffee meetings to share their military experiences. The atmosphere is designed to resemble a military mess hall, fostering camaraderie among attendees at the “Buddy Check Coffee” sessions.

Melanie Woolley, a regular participant and former Canadian Navy port inspection diver, emphasized the importance of providing a casual gathering space for veterans in Manotick, where they can interact without the formality of therapy.

These biweekly meetings, organized by the legion’s operational stress injury special section, are exclusively for military veterans. Terry Hunter, a Canadian Armed Forces veteran, expressed the desire to encourage more veterans to join these gatherings, as many veterans nowadays are not actively involved in the Royal Canadian Legion.

Apart from sharing challenges faced during their service, the coffee meetings also allow veterans to reminisce about positive military experiences. Richard Townsend, a 25-year veteran in both the army and air force, highlighted the importance of coming together, enjoying coffee, sharing stories, and reliving past experiences.

The group’s recent meeting, held before Remembrance Day this year, commemorated the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, holding special significance for veterans with family members who served in the war.

The coffee check-ins aim to bridge the gap between different generations of military veterans, fostering understanding and unity among individuals who may feel disconnected due to varying experiences.

While verbal communication is not mandatory during the meetings, Woolley emphasized the importance of providing a welcoming space outside veterans’ homes, especially for those dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

All military veterans, regardless of legion affiliation, are encouraged to attend these informal sessions. Organizers stress the inclusive nature of the meetings, aiming to provide support and camaraderie to veterans across the country.

Reflecting on the impact of these gatherings, Woolley expressed that if even one person benefits or finds solace from the meetings, it makes the effort worthwhile.
