“India Seeks Energy Partnership with Canada for Growth”

India is keen on acquiring energy resources from Canada and is encouraging the Canadian government to expedite project approvals. This move aims to meet the energy demands of a rapidly growing nation with limited natural resources. India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, emphasized this during an interview with CBC News ahead of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to India.

The visit is focused on establishing new business partnerships and initiating negotiations for a free trade agreement to reduce dependence on the American market. Patnaik expressed India’s interest in purchasing Canadian energy products such as crude oil, LPG, and LNG, highlighting the potential for enhanced bilateral trade relations.

Despite previous tensions due to political issues, the relationship between Canada and India has improved significantly since Carney invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 summit. Both leaders agreed to pursue a comprehensive economic agreement, which is expected to progress further during their upcoming meeting in Delhi.

India is particularly interested in procuring Canadian uranium to support its nuclear energy sector’s expansion. With plans to increase nuclear capacity significantly by 2047, India sees Canada’s uranium reserves as crucial for achieving this goal. Patnaik mentioned India’s willingness to invest in Canadian uranium mines and nuclear technology, emphasizing the mutual benefits of collaboration in the nuclear field.

Furthermore, India is looking to diversify its energy sources and reduce reliance on specific suppliers. The country’s interest in Canadian oil and gas aligns with its strategy to secure a stable and diversified energy supply. Patnaik highlighted the importance of Canada’s potential role in supplying energy to India and emphasized the need for a more balanced energy partnership.

As part of its transition to cleaner energy sources, India aims to increase the share of natural gas in its energy mix. With several LNG export projects in progress, Canada could become a key supplier of LNG to India, supporting its energy transition objectives. Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson underscored the importance of strengthening trade ties between Canada and India to counterbalance global economic dynamics.

The ongoing efforts to enhance energy cooperation between Canada and India reflect a shared commitment to economic growth and sustainability. The potential for expanded trade relations in the energy sector presents significant opportunities for both countries and underscores the importance of diversifying energy sources and fostering mutually beneficial partnerships.
