“Unaware Homeowner’s Negligence Sparks Largest N.S. Wildfire”

Mervyn Perry was unaware that a tire had been set on fire on his property in Barrington, N.S., leading to the province’s largest wildfire, as he had turned off his TV and retired for the night in May 2023. Court records from Dalton Stewart’s recent sentencing under the Forests Act disclosed that the fire originated on Perry’s land near Barrington Lake. Perry only realized the fire’s source days later upon noticing smoke and hearing about it on social media, given that the fire started a few kilometers away from his residence, making it impossible for him to witness the incident.

Stewart, who pleaded guilty to a Forests Act violation, was fined $25,000 on October 16. The court documents detailed the events of May 25, 2023, when Stewart, along with friends, ignited the fire using cardboard and motor oil near Homer’s Rock, a local landmark. Despite attempting to extinguish the flames before departing, Stewart failed to ensure the embers were completely cool.

The wildfire went on to ravage over 23,000 hectares, causing extensive property damage and displacing numerous residents. Perry’s home and cottage were spared, but the fire decimated a significant portion of his property’s trees. Perry, while acknowledging the unintentional nature of the fire and the adverse weather conditions that exacerbated the situation, believed that the penalty imposed should have been more severe considering the destruction caused.

Volunteer firefighter Kevin Doane expressed disappointment over the lightness of Stewart’s fine, given the losses suffered by many individuals, including himself. The aftermath of the wildfire continues to haunt residents, with the charred landscape serving as a constant reminder of the devastation. Perry, resigned to the irreversible damage, hopes that his children will one day enjoy the land he had intended for their benefit.

The sentencing of Stewart evoked painful memories for those affected, as acknowledged by the Barrington and Shelburne wardens. The community’s resilience in the face of adversity was highlighted as a defining trait.
