“Deadly Landslide Strikes New Zealand Campground”

New Zealand officials announced on Saturday their efforts to identify individuals affected by a landslide that struck a busy campground on the North Island. Following the discovery of human remains, it is believed that six individuals, including two teenagers, lost their lives during the landslide caused by heavy rains at Mount Maunganui in Tauranga. Despite initial rescue attempts, authorities have shifted to a recovery operation, as no signs of survivors have been detected since the incident on Thursday.

Chief Coroner Anna Tutton confirmed the initiation of victim identification procedures, emphasizing the meticulous approach being undertaken. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event, extending condolences to the affected families. He visited the disaster site and met with the families of the victims to offer support and solidarity.

The recovery operation, involving 35 personnel and heavy equipment, resumed on Saturday to clear debris from the affected area. However, the forecast of heavy rainfall poses additional challenges, potentially requiring the crew to halt operations for safety reasons. In a separate incident, two individuals lost their lives in a landslide in Papamoa, a neighboring suburb, as a result of the recent heavy rains in the region.
