“Star Blanket Cree Nation Welcomes Bison Home”

Residents of Star Blanket Cree Nation recently witnessed the return of bison to their community, marking a significant moment for the nation. Over the May long weekend, community members, including men, women, and children, came together to welcome the bison to their lands after a journey from a ranch in Alberta.

Sharon Strongarm, who attended the bison release with her grandchildren, described the experience as emotional and spiritual. Witnessing the bison take their first steps into the field stirred deep feelings of connection and heritage for the community.

The initiative to reintroduce bison to the community was a dream of Ariane Starblanket’s late grandfather, a former chief of Star Blanket. Starblanket emphasized the importance of involving youth in the project to foster cultural restoration and land stewardship. The arrival of the bison brought a sense of healing and joy to the community, with vibrations from the bison’s hooves resonating deeply with those present.

Tristan Starr-Desnomie, one of the chosen bison keepers, expressed his honor in caring for the herd and highlighted the unique challenges and rewards of working with these majestic animals. As the bison settle into their new home, caretakers like Austin Elliott are observing their behavior and anticipating future generations benefiting from the bison through food, clothing, and medicine.

Looking ahead, the community is enthusiastic about the educational opportunities the bison herd presents and the potential for growth and empowerment among the younger generation. The return of the bison symbolizes a resurgence of cultural heritage and environmental stewardship for Star Blanket Cree Nation.
