European lawmaker Karin Karlsbro emphasized the importance of actions over words when dealing with U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump’s recent threats to acquire Greenland have sparked opposition from European leaders, with Denmark and Greenland firmly rejecting any U.S. takeover. In response to this, Trump announced a 10% tariff on several EU countries, prompting the EU to consider retaliatory measures, including the potential use of the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), also known as the “trade bazooka.”
While there is a division among EU members regarding the use of the “bazooka,” Karlsbro, a Swedish member of the European Parliament, advocates for a strong response. She believes it is necessary to send a clear message to Trump that coercive tactics will not be tolerated. The ACI would enable the EU to take unified action against economic threats, similar to NATO’s collective defense principle.
Karlsbro highlighted the importance of demonstrating a united front against such coercion and underlined the potential impact of implementing the trade bazooka on sensitive U.S. sectors. She expressed concerns that inaction could lead to further escalation, emphasizing the need for a strong and decisive response to Trump’s threats.
Despite the current tensions, Karlsbro remains hopeful for a common future between the EU and the U.S., emphasizing the importance of cooperation and unity in addressing the situation. She dismissed Trump’s motivations for targeting Greenland, including speculation about the Nobel Peace Prize, as baseless and inappropriate.
Looking ahead, Karlsbro believes that a firm stance, including the use of the trade bazooka and increased military presence within NATO’s framework, can deter any attempts at forced territorial acquisition. She stressed the need for global unity in upholding the established world order and preventing changes through violence or intimidation.
