Writer-composer Dylan MarcAurele was captivated by the Canadian TV sensation “Heated Rivalry” and binge-watched the entire series in one sitting. Inspired by the queer hockey romance between stars Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, played by Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie, MarcAurele envisioned a musical adaptation of the show. Thus, “Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody” was born.
In just a few weeks, MarcAurele penned the play, which quickly progressed from two sold-out concert readings to an off-Broadway run in New York starting May 12. The musical parody adds to the global phenomenon created by the “Heated Rivalry” book by Rachel Reid, which was adapted into a successful TV series, sparking fan fiction, celebrity endorsements, and a dedicated fan base hungry for more content.
With the second season of the TV series scheduled for April 2027, the musical parody is set to premiere on May 26, offering fans a taste of the beloved characters’ adventures. The production blends queer pop-culture elements, reminiscent of classic showtunes like “Anastasia” and “Chess,” with energetic, campy performances infused with ballet-inspired hockey choreography and the spirit of “High School Musical.”
Director-producer Alan Kliffer describes the play as a tribute to the series, highlighting the rapid transition from initial readings to a full-fledged production as a testament to its cultural impact. The show features a talented cast, including Jay Armstrong Johnson as Ilya and Jimin Moon as Shane, who bring authenticity and humor to their performances.
Armstrong Johnson, thrilled to be a part of the musical, embraced the challenge of embodying Ilya’s Russian accent authentically, seeking guidance from a dialect coach. The musical includes a narrator character, Susan, played by Ryann Redmond, adding a unique dimension to the storytelling.
As anticipation builds for the off-Broadway premiere, the creative team remains optimistic about the audience’s reception, aiming to capture the essence of “Heated Rivalry” while delivering a fresh, entertaining experience. Kliffer envisions a future where the musical could make its way to Canada, reflecting on the show’s Canadian roots and potential for wider appeal.
Despite being an unauthorized parody, the production team hopes to garner support from the original creators and cast members, extending invitations to them for the premiere. As the excitement mounts for the New York debut, plans for a potential Canadian run keep the spirit of “Heated Rivalry” alive, showcasing the enduring impact of the beloved series.
