Professor Jacob Tsimerman from the University of Toronto has been honored with the prestigious 2026 Fields Medal, the highest recognition in the field of mathematics worldwide.
He is the first mathematician affiliated with a Canadian institution to receive this award, and the second Canadian to achieve this distinction. The first Canadian to win the Fields Medal was Manjul Bhargava, who won in 2014 while being based at Princeton University.
During the International Mathematical Congress held in Philadelphia, Tsimerman graciously accepted the award on Thursday, expressing his gratitude for the recognition alongside his collaborators.
In a video showcased at the ceremony, Tsimerman emphasized the significance of collaborative efforts in mathematics while discussing the research that led to his distinguished achievement.
His recognition stemmed from his advancements in “the reformation of o-minimality as a crucial technique in arithmetic and complex algebraic geometry,” as stated by the award organizers. He was acknowledged for his involvement in proving various pivotal conjectures, such as Griffiths’ conjecture regarding the algebraic nature of period map images and the Andre-Oort conjecture concerning Siegel modular varieties.
Adam Stinchcombe, a fellow mathematician and associate professor at the University of Toronto, commended Tsimerman for developing innovative methodologies essential for proving these theorems, with potential applications across diverse mathematical domains.
The Fields Medal, accompanied by a monetary award, is bestowed every four years upon four mathematicians under the age of 40 by the International Mathematical Union’s committee. This year’s other recipients were Yu Deng from the University of Chicago, John Pardon from Stony Brook University, and Hong Wang from New York University.
Named after the renowned Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields, these awards are supported by a trust established by Fields at the University of Toronto.
