The rapper Mystikal, also known as Michael Lawrence Tyler, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the rape of a woman at his Louisiana residence in 2022. Mystikal pleaded guilty to third-degree rape in March, accepting a maximum sentence of 20 years, which is five years less than the potential life imprisonment for this crime. Initially facing a first-degree rape charge, his plea deal led to a reduced sentence.
Prior to his sentencing hearing, Mystikal tried to retract his guilty plea, claiming he had not fully considered the consequences. The victim, who accused him of assaulting her at his home in Prairieville near Baton Rouge, urged the judge to impose the maximum penalty during the court proceedings. Allegations included physical violence such as punching, choking, and forcibly raping the victim.
Mystikal has been detained without bail at the Ascension Parish Jail since his arrest. The Louisiana artist gained fame in the 1990s and is best known for his Grammy-nominated 2000 track “Shake Ya A**.” In 2003, he admitted to sexual battery and received a six-year prison term. Additionally, he was a double Grammy nominee that year for his album “Tarantula” and the song “Bouncin’ Back (Bumpin’ Me Against The Wall).”
Legal representatives for Mystikal did not respond immediately to requests for comments on the matter.
