A day after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized the use of economic integration as a form of coercion and highlighted concerns about the disruption of the post-World War II world order, U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a speech at the same event, outlining his perspective on the global order.
Trump emphasized the significant role of the United States as the world’s economic powerhouse, stating that when the U.S. economy prospers, it has a positive impact on the entire world. He expressed his belief that both the U.S. and the world are facing greater risks than ever before, citing threats such as missiles and nuclear weapons.
During his address, Trump mentioned the importance of acquiring Greenland, emphasizing the need for strategic control over the region due to undisclosed security reasons. Following his speech, Trump shared on social media that he had discussed potential agreements regarding Greenland with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, indicating a shift away from imposing tariffs on European countries.
In his lengthy speech, Trump also touched upon various topics, including his administration’s economic and immigration policies, and took jabs at political rivals like former President Joe Biden and U.S. congresswoman Ilhan Omar. He directly addressed Prime Minister Carney, asserting the significance of the relationship between Canada and the United States.
Regarding Greenland, Trump expressed his intention to engage in immediate negotiations to acquire the territory, stressing that military force would not be necessary for the acquisition. He urged Denmark to cooperate in the negotiations, and Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen responded positively, highlighting the importance of diplomatic discussions.
Trump also criticized Europe for what he perceived as self-destructive policies, particularly in the areas of mass migration and environmental initiatives like the “Green New scam.” He urged European nations to follow the U.S.’s lead in terms of deregulation, tax cuts, tariffs, and reduced government spending.
Additionally, Trump lambasted European nations for their contributions to NATO, arguing that they should shoulder more responsibility, especially in conflicts like the situation in Ukraine. He blamed the Ukraine war on alleged election interference in the U.S. presidential election and criticized President Biden’s leadership. Trump mentioned his ongoing efforts to mediate between Russia and Ukraine and his planned meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his time in Switzerland.
