“Manitoba Residents Bombarded with Tornado Alerts”

Phones in southern Manitoba were inundated with tornado alerts on Tuesday night, despite the distant threat for many recipients. Numerous individuals reported receiving over 20 alerts throughout the evening. Two tornadoes have been confirmed south of Winnipeg, with ongoing investigation by Environment and Climate Change Canada for potential additional tornadoes in the region.

Tyler Samagalski, who was at a bar in East Selkirk, mentioned that he and others at the bar eventually disregarded the repeated warnings on their phones as the outside conditions did not indicate any approaching tornado. The alerts were issued for the “mobile coverage area,” meaning all devices connected to a cellphone tower in the affected region received the alert, causing discrepancies in warning locations.

Environment Canada is conducting an inquiry to understand why some individuals received multiple alerts. Plans for a more targeted warning system for thunderstorms and tornadoes are in progress, with the agency offering a four-hour course on convective alert modernization. This new system will resemble the one used in the United States, where notifications are sent only to those directly in the storm’s path.

Concerns have been raised about the current warning system overselling the danger, leading to potential fatigue among recipients. Residents like Jason Emmers from East Selkirk expressed receiving around 20 tornado alerts, underscoring the need for a more precise and efficient alert mechanism to prevent unnecessary anxiety and confusion. Emmers emphasized the importance of incorporating specific details about tornado locations in the alerts to improve their effectiveness.
