Joni Mitchell Becomes U.S. Citizen at 82

More than sixty years after departing from Canada, iconic singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has now become a United States citizen at the age of 82. Mitchell shared this significant milestone via a post on Instagram and X, revealing a photo and video from her naturalization ceremony. The image captures Mitchell donning a red beret and sunglasses, holding a small American flag attached to her cardigan while smiling. The accompanying video showcases her receiving applause as she advances during the ceremony. In a concise caption, Mitchell simply stated, “A journey that began 62 years ago.”

Originally named Roberta Joan Anderson, Mitchell was born in Fort Macleod, Alberta, in 1943. She relocated to the U.S. in the 1960s during a short-lived marriage to American musician Chuck Mitchell, residing in Detroit and New York before settling in California, where she emerged as a prominent figure in the Laurel Canyon music scene. Although presently living in Santa Barbara, California, Mitchell maintains a secondary residence on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast.

Renowned for songs like “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Woodstock,” as well as her influential 1971 album “Blue,” Mitchell has transitioned from performing in Toronto coffeehouses as a folk singer to becoming one of the most esteemed songwriters in history. With a discography comprising 19 studio albums, Mitchell has garnered numerous accolades, including 11 Grammys, five Juno Awards, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The news of Mitchell’s U.S. citizenship has triggered varied responses on social media, with some users celebrating the announcement while others questioned the timing, particularly given Mitchell’s vocal political opinions in recent years. Despite her new citizenship status, Mitchell will retain her Canadian passport as both countries allow for dual citizenship.

In light of Mitchell’s health challenges, including a 2015 brain aneurysm that affected her speech and mobility, she spent several years recovering before returning to public performances in 2022. Earlier this year, at the Juno Awards in Hamilton, Ontario, Prime Minister Mark Carney honored her with a lifetime achievement award. Additionally, there are reports of a biopic based on Mitchell’s life in development, with director Cameron Crowe and actress Meryl Streep linked to the project.

The transition to U.S. citizenship does not signify a detachment from her Canadian roots, as Mitchell will maintain her ties with both countries. While the decision to become a U.S. citizen has sparked interest and debates online, Mitchell’s enduring legacy as a musical icon remains undisputed.
