The exact pathway for the tournament will be revealed during the draw on December 5 at the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. FIFA disclosed details of the draw procedure on Tuesday, giving a glimpse of what could transpire. The tournament will feature 48 teams and 104 games, with the co-hosts, including Mexico, Canada, and the United States, being allocated positions in different groups.
The draw will see the top-ranked teams and co-hosts placed in Pot A, while the remaining teams will be distributed in Pots B, C, and D based on their rankings. Pot D will include six potentially higher-ranked teams from the FIFA Playoff Tournament and European playoff matches.
Among the European playoff field are teams like Italy, Denmark, Turkey, Ukraine, and several others. Canada is restricted from being grouped with another CONCACAF team in the initial stage. The decision to place playoff winners in Pot 4, alongside teams like Curacao and Haiti, was made to ensure fair competition for all teams participating.
In the event that Canada advances as the Group B winner, they will face a third-place team from a different group in the Round of 32. Meanwhile, the Group B runner-up is poised to meet the second-place finisher from Mexico’s Group A. The top-ranked teams like Spain and Argentina are strategically placed in the draw to avoid meeting until the final stages.
FIFA will release the updated match schedule, including stadium assignments and kickoff times, on December 6. Canada, currently ranked 41st globally, had a tough draw at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, facing Belgium, Croatia, and Morocco. The team will be aiming for a better performance in their third appearance at the prestigious tournament.
