“PM’s $736K Egypt Trip Criticized in Commons”

Prime Minister Mark Carney faced criticism in the House of Commons on Wednesday over the revelation that his sudden trip to Egypt for the Gaza peace summit in October cost Canadian taxpayers over $736,466. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre spearheaded the criticism, highlighting the high cost of the trip in contrast to the financial struggles faced by Canadians due to rising living expenses.

Poilievre described Carney’s trip as an extravagant $800,000 private flight to Egypt for mere photo opportunities, labeling Carney as the “Grinch of the grocery store.” Questions arose about why Canadians were facing food insecurity while their leader was jet-setting around the world.

During the absence of Carney in the House of Commons, government House leader Steven MacKinnon and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand defended the trip, emphasizing Carney’s important role in international efforts to address the Gaza conflict. They pointed out that Carney’s presence at the summit was crucial for advancing peace initiatives in the Middle East.

The clash in parliament followed a government response revealing that the chartered private jet for Carney’s trip to Egypt cost significantly more than if the Royal Canadian Air Force had provided transportation. The government chartered a Bombardier Global 5000 jet, while estimates showed that using a government-owned Challenger aircraft would have been much cheaper.

While the cost of the trip was initially reported at $736,466, additional expenses may push the final figure higher. The breakdown of these costs has not been provided yet, raising questions about other potential expenses such as security personnel salaries and accommodation costs.

The trip to Egypt, where the peace summit took place, saw Carney and other world leaders convene to discuss and sign agreements aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza. Despite the scrutiny over the trip’s expenses, Carney’s attendance was highlighted as a significant diplomatic effort to contribute to peace-building in the region.

The decision to charter a private jet for the trip was attributed to time constraints and unavailability of Canadian Armed Forces aircraft. Carney’s spokesperson emphasized that all necessary approvals were obtained, and the government opted for the most cost-effective option that met safety standards for the urgent summit.

Following the summit, senior officials praised Carney’s active participation and advocacy for increased aid to Gaza. While some questioned the high cost of the trip, others acknowledged the importance of Canada’s global presence and active involvement in international peace initiatives.
