Pakistan and Afghanistan in “Open War” Amid Cross-Border Attacks

Pakistan and Afghanistan have engaged in a series of attacks, leading to heightened tensions described by Pakistan’s defense minister as an “open war.” The conflict escalated when Afghanistan launched a cross-border attack on Pakistan in retaliation for previous deadly Pakistani airstrikes. Subsequently, Pakistan responded with airstrikes in Kabul and two other Afghan provinces, targeting military installations.

Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid stated that Afghanistan had hit important military targets in Pakistan to send a message and retaliate against Pakistan’s actions. Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif declared that their patience had worn thin and that they were now in a state of open war.

Asif expressed disappointment in the Taliban, hoping for peace in Afghanistan following the NATO forces’ withdrawal in 2021. Instead, he accused the Taliban of turning Afghanistan into a “colony of India,” which has strained Pakistan’s relations with Afghanistan due to India’s growing influence in the region.

The ongoing conflict stems from accusations by Pakistan that Afghanistan’s Taliban government harbors militant groups that conduct cross-border attacks, often with alleged support from India, Pakistan’s archrival. Despite efforts to negotiate a ceasefire through Qatari mediation and peace talks in Istanbul, tensions remain high between the two nations.

Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of “exporting terrorism,” attributing increased militant violence in Pakistan to alleged support from Afghan territories. The conflict has also involved accusations of India backing separatist groups and the Pakistani Taliban from across the border, further fueling the animosity between the neighboring countries.

Casualty claims from the recent attacks differ significantly between the two sides, with each disputing the other’s figures. The United Nations and various countries, including Iran and Russia, have called for an immediate halt to the fighting and a diplomatic resolution to the conflict to protect civilians and resolve differences through dialogue.
