“Sudden SiriusXM Channel Change Leaves Comedians Struggling”

Comedian Liz Miele and numerous other comedians have recently faced a significant setback in their earnings. SiriusXM made the decision to discontinue its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, known for showcasing over 800 comedians, and introduced a new channel under the ownership of renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

This move has left Miele and many other working-class comedians without a vital source of income and exposure, while prominent celebrity comedians dominate the platform. Miele expressed how crucial SiriusXM was for her financial stability last year and highlighted the impact on fellow comedians who relied on the channel to make ends meet during challenging times.

Despite promises from Maniscalco and SiriusXM to provide opportunities for comedians at various career stages, industry advocacy group Stand Up for Standup revealed a stark contrast in the numbers. The previous channel featured over 800 comedians monthly, each earning $15 in royalties per spin, whereas the rebranded channel showcased only 275 comedians, with a significant portion of plays going to top-tier artists.

Miele emphasized the shift towards a concentration of wealth, where a select few comedians, including established figures like Chris Rock and Kevin Hart, now dominate the platform’s content. The change has affected many comedians, like Toronto-based Danish Anwar, who witnessed a decline of up to 40% in their royalties, impacting their livelihoods and ability to sustain their careers.

While some high-profile comedians have called on Maniscalco to support emerging talents on the platform, Maniscalco clarified that the decision to end Raw Comedy was not his own. SiriusXM attributed the channel’s closure to underperformance, stating their commitment to providing opportunities for comedians across all career stages.

The situation has raised concerns among comedians, with doubts about the future of emerging talents and the industry’s solidarity. Toronto-born comedian Steph Tolev referenced a past incident involving SiriusXM’s Canada Laughs channel, where public pressure led to a reversal of a similar decision, emphasizing the power of collective action.

Anwar expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of such tactics with a U.S. company but stressed the importance of unity in addressing industry challenges. Despite the financial blow comedians have experienced, there is hope for increased solidarity and improved conditions within the comedy community.
