American skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin showcased her dominance in a World Cup slalom event on home snow in Colorado. Shiffrin maintained her flawless performance in the discipline throughout the Olympic season, securing her fourth consecutive slalom victory. This win marked Shiffrin’s 104th World Cup triumph, with 67 of those victories achieved in slalom, setting a remarkable record in the discipline.
During the event, held at Copper Mountain near Shiffrin’s hometown of Edwards, Colo., she excelled in challenging conditions with moderate snowfall. Shiffrin widened her lead from the first run and triumphed by an impressive margin of 1.57 seconds over Lena Duerr of Germany, who climbed from ninth place after the initial leg.
Fans at Copper Mountain cheered Shiffrin on with supportive signs, and the athlete expressed gratitude to the crowd for their encouragement. Despite facing adverse weather and tough competition, Shiffrin delivered a flawless performance, describing her run as “lights out amazing.”
In the race, teenager Lara Colturi of Albania overcame an early mistake to finish third, trailing Shiffrin by 1.85 seconds. Wendy Holdener secured fourth place, followed by Anna Swenn Larsson in fifth position. Notably, this victory marked Shiffrin’s first win in Colorado in over a decade, with 12 of her 104 World Cup wins occurring in the United States.
Shiffrin’s remarkable career also includes a previous slalom victory at the 2015 world championships in Vail-Beaver Creek, Colo. This season, she achieved the feat of winning the opening three slaloms for the fourth time in her career, showcasing her consistent excellence in the discipline.
Looking ahead, Shiffrin is anticipated to be a key contender at the upcoming Milan Cortina Olympics, where she is expected to shine in women’s Alpine skiing. Following her success at the 2021 world championships in Cortina, where she clinched four medals, Shiffrin continues to demonstrate her prowess on the slopes.
The emotional journey for Shiffrin continued as she watched her fiancée, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, make a remarkable comeback to racing after a two-year hiatus due to serious injuries. Shiffrin’s next challenge will be competing in two giant slalom events in Tremblant, Quebec, before heading back to Europe for the remainder of the season.
