A 66-year-old British man, Howard Phillips, was sentenced to seven years in prison on Friday for attempting to spy for Russia. Phillips, who had aspirations of emulating James Bond, was convicted in July for trying to provide information about former defence secretary Grant Shapps to individuals he believed were Russian intelligence agents. However, unbeknownst to him, the supposed agents were actually undercover British intelligence operatives.
During the sentencing at Winchester Crown Court in southern England, Justice Bobbie Cheema-Grubb scolded Phillips, stating, “You were willing to betray your country in exchange for financial gain.” The judge further noted that Phillips exhibited narcissistic traits and an inflated sense of self-importance.
Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Phillips planned to aid Russian agents between late 2023 and May 2024, a period that coincided with Shapps’ tenure as defence secretary. Specifically, Phillips attempted to disclose Shapps’ contact information and the location of his private aircraft to enable Russian surveillance of British defense strategies.
Phillips’ former wife testified in court, describing his fascination with James Bond and British espionage films. In a statement read to the court, Shapps expressed shock at Phillips’ actions, recalling a dinner he attended at Phillips’ residence in 2002. He condemned Phillips for jeopardizing his family’s safety by engaging in reckless behavior that exposed them to potential risks from foreign intelligence services.
Bethan David, the head of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Counter Terrorism Division, emphasized that Phillips’ conviction serves as a stark warning to individuals contemplating espionage or collaboration with Russia.
