U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy issued a stern warning on Friday, indicating that the administration might compel airlines to reduce flights by up to 20% if the government shutdown persisted. In response to orders from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), airlines have already slashed four percent of their domestic flights at 40 major airports, with a further increase to 10% scheduled for November 14.
Secretary Duffy mentioned the possibility of mandating 20% cuts in the future, emphasizing that decisions would be data-driven and based on airspace observations. The extended government shutdown has led to challenges, with 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 security screeners working without pay, resulting in heightened absenteeism.

United Airlines reported successful rebooking for half of the impacted passengers within four hours of their original departure time.
