In April, Canadians witnessed Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen set a new human exploration record during the Artemis II mission, alongside three NASA astronauts, as they circled the moon. This mission marked a significant step towards NASA’s goal of returning humans to the lunar surface by 2028 with the Artemis IV mission.

Unlike the Apollo program of the past, NASA’s Artemis program is an international collaboration involving 68 countries that have signed the Artemis Accords. The plan is not just a brief visit but aims for a sustainable human presence on the moon, requiring infrastructure such as construction vehicles, surveillance cameras, and power sources.

Canada is actively contributing to the effort to return humans to the moon, with Canadian technology already in place. While a small lunar rover project was canceled in March, plans for a larger lunar utility vehicle are underway, with Canadian companies like MDA Space, Canadensys Aerospace, and Mission Control competing for the contract.

NASA recently shifted its focus from the Lunar Gateway space station to a new initiative named Moon Base near the lunar south pole. This base will serve as a living and working space, with construction taking place in three phases in collaboration with commercial partners.

Canadian companies like Canadensys and Mission Control have a history of lunar missions, providing cameras for previous missions like Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost lunar lander. Canada’s expertise in space robotics positions it well for a significant role in lunar operations.

The Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation (CSMC) is developing a low-enriched uranium nuclear reactor for lunar power needs, which could also benefit remote communities on Earth. This technology aligns with the long-term sustainable lunar operations required for the Artemis program.

Opportunities for Canadian technology on the moon extend to mining, robotics, and other fields. With the success of recent missions and the unique position Canada holds in space exploration, there is a call for seizing the current opportunity to make meaningful contributions to lunar exploration efforts.
