Canadian crypto fugitive Andean Medjedovic had his global escapades abruptly ended when Dutch authorities issued a European arrest warrant for him, accusing the 21-year-old of a sophisticated cryptocurrency hack worth $48 million US. After being on the run for four years, Medjedovic’s whereabouts were a mystery, with reports suggesting he traveled to various countries like Brazil, Dubai, and Spain.
Known for using his mathematical and computer skills to drain millions from crypto platforms, Medjedovic engaged with victims and observers in a unique manner following his heists. His refusal of a bug bounty and demands for control over the hacked platforms led to extortion charges against him by the U.S. Department of Justice.
During extradition proceedings in Serbia, documents revealed details of Medjedovic’s lavish lifestyle funded by his alleged $65 million US in cryptocurrency. Despite attempts to evade capture using fake identities, he was eventually arrested and faced extradition requests from multiple countries.
Accused of exploiting vulnerabilities in crypto platforms to manipulate trades and misrepresent asset values, Medjedovic faced charges related to thefts from KyberSwap and Indexed Finance. His alleged involvement in laundering criminal proceeds through cryptocurrency mixers and detailed plans for evading authorities were highlighted in the U.S. indictment.
After being released from Serbian custody due to lack of evidence for extradition, Medjedovic was believed to be in Bosnia. Authorities tracked movements of funds connected to his schemes, indicating potential attempts to hide illicit gains. Experts warned that evasion in the digital realm is increasingly challenging, with consequences including lengthy prison terms for non-cooperation.
