“Stolen Granite Rock ‘Portable’ Found in California, Returned to Squamish”

A mystery surrounding the disappearance of a cherished granite rock in Squamish, British Columbia, has been resolved. The rock, known as Portable, was a favorite among climbers for its ideal shape and size for balance and grip training.

Local climbers expressed shock and confusion when Portable went missing last autumn, considering its significant value to the community. Recently, the rock was discovered in Bishop, California, by Squamish climber Ethan Salvo, who recognized it through a social media photo.

Salvo described Portable as sporting a Canadian drinking toque and other accessories, making it easily identifiable. After confirming its identity, Salvo arranged for the rock to be returned to its original spot at the base of the Superfly boulder in Squamish.

The unexpected journey of Portable to California remains a mystery, but Salvo believes it might have been taken by a visitor to Squamish without realizing the impact on the community. The rock’s safe return has brought relief to the climbing community, eager to have their beloved training rock back where it belongs.
