“Canada Denies Talks on U.S. Statehood Amid G7 Discussions”

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand confirmed that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio did not discuss President Donald Trump’s suggestion of Canada becoming the 51st state during their recent talks. Anand expressed readiness to host Rubio and other Group of Seven foreign ministers in Ontario’s Niagara Region to address mutual economic and security concerns amidst global instability.

The strained Canada-U.S. relationship, exacerbated by Trump’s tariff policies and annexation threats, was a focal point during the G7 foreign ministers meeting in Quebec. Rubio, at the time, hinted at Trump’s belief that Canada should merge with the U.S. for economic reasons, sparking discussions about Canadian sovereignty.

During the G7 leaders summit in Alberta, Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed that Trump showed respect for Canadian sovereignty and did not raise the idea of Canada becoming a U.S. state. Rubio’s participation in the G7 meeting aims to advance American interests in peace, security, strategic cooperation, and global stability, with a focus on various critical issues like Ukraine, Gaza, maritime security, and supply chain resilience.

Carney’s efforts to stabilize the Canada-U.S. relationship were commended by Trump during a meeting in October but faced setbacks when negotiations were suspended following a TV ad sponsored by Ontario featuring Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs. Anand highlighted the multilateral nature of the G7 discussions, emphasizing the importance of addressing issues like critical minerals, Arctic security, and Gaza, irrespective of trade negotiations’ status.

Apart from the G7 members, Canada also invited foreign ministers from countries like Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico, and others to diversify trade partnerships amid U.S. protectionism. Carney and Anand have been actively working to strengthen ties with India after a diplomatic fallout in 2023, following a controversial incident. The inclusion of additional countries in the G7 summit aims to foster a comprehensive and productive dialogue on global issues.
