Lions in the West Division final on Saturday, securing their spot in the Grey Cup. Trailing 21-17 with just over a minute remaining, the Riders orchestrated a 74-yard drive in seven plays to clinch the victory and secure a place in the championship game against the Montreal Alouettes in Winnipeg on November 16.
Earlier on the same day, the Montreal Alouettes secured their spot in the Grey Cup by defeating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 19-16 in the East Division final. Despite holding a 14-7 lead in the third quarter, the Riders found themselves trailing 21-14 after the Lions scored two touchdowns.
Saskatchewan had a chance to score from the B.C. five-yard line with three minutes left but opted for a field goal to narrow the gap to 21-17. The Riders’ defense stepped up, forcing crucial stops to give the offense a chance to seal the win.
The first half of the game saw a defensive battle, with both teams combining for 11 punts in front of a packed crowd at Mosaic Stadium. B.C. managed to score the only touchdown of the half on a 103-yard drive, with quarterback Nathan Rourke rushing for a four-yard score to give the Lions a 7-1 lead.
Saskatchewan clawed back with a field goal on the stroke of halftime, making it 7-4 going into the break. This victory marks the Roughriders’ return to the Grey Cup for the first time since their 2013 triumph over the Tiger-Cats.
