WestJet employees have decided to halt their job action, but Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is cautioning travelers with bookings on the airline that their flights could still be impacted. Following the cancellation of several hundred flights, WestJet and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) reached a tentative agreement in their contract dispute early Monday. YVR mentioned that it will take some time for WestJet’s operations to return to normal. On Monday, 21 WestJet flights are set to depart from Vancouver, while 49 others remain canceled, according to YVR.
WestJet Encore flights were not affected by the job action. The flight attendants of WestJet went on strike on Sunday, seeking compensation for the hours they spend assisting passengers or waiting for delayed flights to take off.
Some WestJet passengers faced challenges due to the disruptions on Monday. For instance, Tran Thai from Edmonton had his flight canceled and had to reschedule to fly from Vancouver to Victoria in the evening, followed by a 16-hour layover before catching a flight back home.
Details of the tentative agreement between WestJet and CUPE have not been disclosed yet. The agreement will need to be ratified by CUPE members before it becomes effective.
