Firefighters successfully rescued a worker trapped under debris in a medieval tower during renovation in the heart of Rome. Despite the rescue effort, the worker, identified as Octav Stroici, tragically passed away due to the injuries sustained. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed deep condolences for the loss and extended sympathy to Stroici’s family and colleagues.
Rescuers, including the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry, worked tirelessly for 11 hours to extract Stroici. Another Romanian worker was safely rescued. The operation faced challenges as different approaches were attempted, including using a crane to remove rubble from the tower.
Mayor Roberto Gualtieri highlighted the delicate extraction process to ensure the safety of the trapped worker. Despite initial communication with Stroici during the rescue, he later succumbed to his injuries. The incident left one worker hospitalized in critical condition, while three others were rescued unharmed.
The Torre dei Conti, constructed in the 13th century, has a history of structural issues, with previous collapses in the past centuries. The ongoing restoration project, valued at $11.1 million, aimed to revitalize the tower for public access. Investigations into the incident for possible charges of negligence are underway.
Hundreds of onlookers, including tourists, witnessed the dramatic rescue operation as parts of the tower continued to crumble. The tower, closed since 2007, was undergoing extensive restoration work, including the installation of modern amenities and a new museum section dedicated to Roman history. Italian authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.
