“Team Canada Triumphs Over Mexico in Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers”

Team Canada secured a spot in the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers by triumphing over Mexico in the Group A playoffs at Club Sonoma. Victoria Mboko from Toronto swiftly defeated Renata Zarazua 6-1, 6-1 in just 53 minutes. Carson Branstine, a dual American-Canadian citizen hailing from Montreal, clinched a victory over Julia Garcia with a score of 6-3, 7-6, leading Canada to a clean sweep in the best-of-three final.

A defeat in any singles match would have pushed Canada into a must-win doubles match, featuring Gabriela Dabrowski and Mboko against Giuliana Olmos and Zarazua. The decisive victory against Mexico followed a 2-1 win over Denmark on Saturday, setting the stage for the winner-take-all showdown on Sunday.

Branstine, who transitioned from representing the United States to Canada in 2017, kickstarted the match against Mexico with a strong performance, securing a singles victory over Garcia. The match lasted one hour and 39 minutes, with Branstine displaying remarkable stats including one ace, three double faults, and a high percentage of points won on serve and return games.

Reflecting on her victory, Branstine shared, “I was a bit nervous going into the match, especially after a period with limited play due to injury. I knew my level was there, and I’m glad I could execute and contribute to the win.” Meanwhile, Mboko, who delivered an impressive match, highlighted the challenge of facing a skilled opponent in their home country but expressed her satisfaction in securing the win for the Canadian team.

The duo’s exceptional performances propelled Team Canada to victory, securing their place in the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers.
