Researchers in Spain made an intriguing discovery by finding sugar near the center of the Milky Way, approximately 26,000 light-years away from Earth. The team at Spain’s Centre for Astrobiology utilized two radio telescopes to detect a four-carbon sugar called erythrulose in a molecular cloud, a first-time observation of sugar in the interstellar medium.
This finding is significant as sugars are crucial for the development of life on Earth, acting as fundamental components for nucleic acids necessary for life as we know it. The discovery sheds light on the origins of sugar molecules, which have been a longstanding question in scientific research.
The discovery of erythrulose in the molecular cloud suggests that sugars could have been transported to Earth billions of years ago by comets and asteroids during the Late Heavy Bombardment period. The study, published in the Nature Astronomy journal, indicates that the interstellar medium may serve as a potential source of sugar not only on Earth but also elsewhere in the universe, opening up possibilities for further space exploration and the discovery of essential molecules for life’s origin.
