This project, considered one of the largest population genomics studies in Canada, seeks to identify genetic conditions associated with hereditary cancers and high cholesterol-related heart disease risks.

The research combines screening outcomes to empower participants and their healthcare providers in making informed decisions to potentially mitigate, delay, or prevent cancer and heart disease. Simultaneously, hospital researchers will leverage the gathered data to address health risks that some individuals may face disproportionately.

Initially, the study will focus on cancer patients at the hospital who might carry genetic predispositions influencing their treatment or monitoring protocols, as highlighted by Dr. Raymond Kim, the medical director of cancer early detection at Princess Margaret. Understanding the genetic makeup of these patients is pivotal for identifying potential risks beyond their current cancer diagnosis.

Genetic profiling can alert healthcare professionals to specific risks and guide treatment strategies. For instance, individuals with BRCA mutations are advised to begin breast monitoring at an early age, while those with gene variants like Lynch syndrome may require colonscopies for cancer prevention.

One patient, Leslie Born, shared her experience of being diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer despite no significant family history of the disease. Following genetic screening, she discovered a BRCA2 mutation, which heightened her susceptibility to various cancers. Born now undergoes regular breast monitoring based on her genomic information, a practice crucial for her ongoing care.

The project’s scope extends beyond identifying high-risk families through traditional means, as highlighted by Laura Palma, a certified genetic counselor at McGill University Health Centre. Broadening access to genetic testing is crucial in capturing individuals who might otherwise go undetected, especially as family sizes diminish over generations.

While the genomic testing and subsequent care carry financial implications, the long-term cost-effectiveness and feasibility within the Canadian healthcare system remain to be determined. Jenna Scott, co-director of the masters program in genetic counseling at the University of British Columbia, commended the project’s advancements in genetic testing accessibility while raising concerns about broader implementation, particularly concerning cultural considerations and scalability.

As the project progresses, researchers aim to disseminate findings among participants and assess the broader implications of widespread genetic screenings. The ultimate goal is to determine the efficacy and benefits of such comprehensive screening initiatives and extend enrollment beyond the initial patient pool to include referrals from family physicians.
