An Ontario Grade 8 teacher admitted guilt to luring and child pornography charges after utilizing Snapchat to exchange nude images with former students. Kelly-Anne Jennings, 41, acknowledged her guilt in a Peterborough, Ont., courtroom, with parents of victims present. The charges against Jennings, which originated from incidents in 2023, included child luring, creating child pornography, and sharing sexually explicit material with minors. The victims, identified as teenage boys who were once Jennings’ students, were at the center of the case.
Jennings confessed her guilt when asked by Ontario Court Justice Nathan N. Baker. Additional charges, including sexual assault, were withdrawn at the Crown’s request. Details emerged in court that Jennings, under the influence of alcohol, sent increasingly explicit content, including videos of herself engaging in sexual acts, to her former students via Snapchat. The court revealed that Jennings also received nude images of the boys upon request.
A publication ban was imposed to protect the victims’ identities and any information that could reveal them, including the school where Jennings taught. A mother of one victim described Jennings’ actions as predatory, manipulative, and highly detrimental. Crown attorney Julie Ann Barrett asserted that Jennings manipulated and exploited the boys for her own gratification.
Following the initial allegations, Jennings was suspended without pay from her teaching position in Port Hope, part of Northumberland County. The local school board confirmed Jennings’ termination, emphasizing the impact of the charges on the community. Despite Jennings’ standing as a teacher in good standing, the seriousness of the charges prompted her removal from the school board.
Initially arrested in August 2024 after a student reported inappropriate conduct during a class trip, Jennings faced additional charges as more complainants came forward. The Crown recommended a four-year prison term, while Jennings’ defense sought a non-custodial sentence of two years less a day, followed by probation. Jennings is scheduled for further court proceedings on Nov. 27.
