“Man Confesses to Jam Master Jay Murder After 25 Years”

Nearly 25 years following the fatal shooting of rap icon Jam Master Jay from the group Run-DMC, a man confessed in court on Monday to participating in the long-standing unsolved murder. Jay Bryant pleaded guilty to a federal charge of murder, admitting that he facilitated the entry of individuals into a recording studio to attack the DJ, also known as Jason Mizell.

During the court proceedings, Bryant acknowledged his awareness that a firearm would be used to harm Jason Mizell and expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging their criminal nature. While Bryant did not disclose the identities of his accomplices, two other men, Karl Jordan Jr. and Ronald Washington, were previously convicted in 2024, with Jordan later being cleared by a judge.

Bryant, aged 52, is anticipated to receive a prison sentence ranging between 15 to 20 years for the murder, in addition to unrelated drug and weapon charges to which he had previously pleaded guilty. The sentencing date has not yet been determined. Despite the gravity of the situation, Bryant signaled approval to someone in the courtroom before departing, with no comments provided by his legal team or the prosecutors present.

The fatal incident occurred in 2002 when Mizell, a prominent figure in the music industry and member of the groundbreaking group Run-DMC, was tragically shot in his studio in Queens. Despite Run-DMC’s success and accolades, including gold- and platinum-selling albums and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Mizell’s untimely death left a lasting impact on the hip-hop community.

The prosecution alleged that Jordan and Washington, both acquainted with Mizell, held animosity towards him due to a failed drug deal. While Run-DMC promoted an anti-drug message, it was suggested that Mizell engaged in drug-related activities to sustain his lifestyle. The circumstances surrounding his death remained unresolved until the arrests of Jordan and Washington in 2020, with Bryant’s involvement coming to light later.

Prosecutors linked Bryant to the crime scene through DNA evidence found on a hat and his presence at the studio building. Bryant’s connection to the murder was attributed to his association with individuals involved in a drug transaction with Mizell, leading to his assistance in facilitating the attack. Despite conflicting testimonies, prosecutors maintained that Bryant’s role was crucial in enabling the assailants to access the studio without alerting Mizell.

The latest developments in the case have brought some closure while underscoring the complexities surrounding the investigation into the tragic death of Jam Master Jay.
