“Hiker Escapes Grizzly Encounter at Troll Falls, Bear Warning Issued”

A hiker narrowly escaped a charging grizzly bear encounter close to Troll Falls in Kananaskis Country, triggering a bear warning for the area. The incident occurred on Monday, prompting authorities to issue a cautionary notice for Bow Valley Wildland Provincial Park and Evan-Thomas Provincial Recreation Area, encompassing popular trails like Stoney Trail, Skogan Pass Trail, and Hay Meadow Trail near Kananaskis Village.

Bear encounters can happen unexpectedly, emphasized the warning, advising hikers to carry bear spray and be aware of proper wildlife interaction protocols. John Clarke, a former conservation officer and founder of the Canadian Bear Safety Authority, emphasized the importance of understanding bear behavior, particularly during this time when bears are emerging from hibernation in search of food.

As bears enter their breeding season in late spring, they start preparing for winter by consuming high-fat foods. In well-visited areas like K-Country, Banff, and Jasper, bears are more accustomed to human presence, having adapted to seeing numerous visitors compared to remote wilderness locations.

To enhance safety measures, the warning suggests making noise while hiking, traveling in groups, leashing pets, carrying bear spray, and securely storing food in bear-resistant containers. Any wildlife sightings or incidents can be reported to 403-591-7755.

Despite attempts to reach out to the Ministry of Forestry and Parks for comments, there was no response from them at the time of publication. Notably, Kananaskis Country faced a comprehensive bear warning last summer, marking the first region-wide alert since 2016.
