Blockbuster romance writer Carley Fortune has revealed the upcoming release of her sixth book, titled “Only in Summer,” scheduled to hit shelves on May 18, 2027. This novel will transport readers back to Barry’s Bay, Ontario, a familiar setting from Fortune’s earlier works such as “Every Summer After” and “One Golden Summer,” and also her hometown.
In a recent newsletter announcement, Fortune shared her excitement about purchasing a cottage near Barry’s Bay before commencing her writing journey. She expressed her long-standing dream of owning a cottage after selling her family’s lakeside residence.
The protagonist of “Only in Summer,” Eleanor Florek, known as Ellie, mirrors Fortune’s dream of owning property in Barry’s Bay. Ellie, the cousin of characters Charlie and Sam from previous Barry’s Bay tales, has always aspired to acquire her own space in the town. However, her plans are disrupted when a neighboring house is torn down to make way for a new lavish mansion, leaving Ellie surprised and curious about the new owner.
While the plot details remain scarce, it is anticipated that a hesitant romance will unfold against the picturesque backdrop of the lakeside setting. Carley Fortune, a writer and journalist based in Toronto, has a rich editorial background with notable stints at Refinery29, The Globe and Mail, Chatelaine, and Toronto Life. Her earlier works include “Our Perfect Storm,” “One Golden Summer,” “Every Summer After,” “This Summer Will Be Different,” and “Meet Me at the Lake.”
“Meet Me at the Lake” was a finalist on Canada Reads in 2024, championed by fashion content creator and model Mirian Njoh, marking the first romance novel to feature on the show. Additionally, “Every Summer After” has been adapted into the Amazon Prime Video series “Every Year After,” which premiered recently and has been renewed for a second season based on “One Golden Summer.” Netflix Canada is also in the process of adapting “This Summer Will Be Different” into a 10-episode series.
