Courtney Sarault emerged victorious in the women’s overall competition, securing Canada’s second consecutive team Crystal Globe at the short track World Tour finale held in Dordrecht, Netherlands. Hailing from Moncton, she claimed silver in the 1,500 meters and then triumphed in the 500m event, amassing a total of nine medals, including five gold, three silver, and one bronze, throughout the four World Tour stops.
At 25 years old, Sarault made history as the first Canadian woman to clinch the overall World Tour title, accumulating 980 points, a substantial 150-point lead over the runner-up, Corrine Stoddard from the United States. This achievement solidified her position at the top of the standings.
In the 500m race, Sarault, the reigning Canadian champion, seized the gold medal by outpacing Stoddard by 0.304 seconds with a remarkable time of 42.695. Starting from the second position, she executed a bold move on the third lap, overtaking the reigning world champion Xandra Velzeboer of the Netherlands to claim the top spot.
Adding to her impressive performance, Sarault also secured the women’s 1,000m title with 300 points, securing her first-ever Crystal Globe after finishing 70 points ahead of Belgium’s Hanne Desmet.
The Canadian Ice Maples retained their team title, accumulating a total of 31 medals, including 15 gold, seven silver, and nine bronze. With a total of 5,656 points, they comfortably outpaced the second-place Dutch Lions by a significant margin.
Reflecting on their success, Sarault expressed pride in the team’s performance and supportive dynamic, emphasizing their unity and determination. The victory marked a clean sweep of the Crystal Globe titles for Canada, as William Dandjinou from Montreal secured the men’s overall title for the second consecutive year.
The shortened World Tour, consisting of four stops instead of the usual six, was a prelude to the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympics, with the results influencing the allocation of quota spots for each country. The Canadian high-performance program will utilize the outcomes to select the representatives for the upcoming Winter Games in Italy.
Sarault’s outstanding achievements and Canada’s dominance in the short track speed skating World Tour have set a strong foundation for their Olympic aspirations, with the nation poised for success on the international stage.
