Mathieu Barsalou scored four touchdowns to lead the Montreal Carabins to a 49-19 victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies in the Uteck Bowl on Saturday. Montreal will now advance to the Vanier Cup, the national championship game of U Sports football, where they will face the Saskatchewan Huskies. Saskatchewan secured their spot in the final by defeating the Queen’s University Gaels 22-11 in the Mitchell Bowl shortly after Montreal’s win.
Carabins’ quarterback Pepe Gonzalez completed 18 of 26 passes for 168 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception. Enrique Jaimes Leclair caught Gonzalez’s touchdown pass, and Gregory Mulenda-St-Pierre added another rushing touchdown for the RSEQ champions.
Montreal took control early, building a commanding 22-2 lead by halftime and maintaining their momentum in the second half. The Carabins’ lowest-scoring quarter was the first, where they scored eight points, but they consistently put up at least 13 points in the subsequent quarters.
