The FBI and U.S. Secret Service have provided additional information following an incident where an armed individual breached the secure perimeter of Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump’s resort in Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday morning.
The individual, identified as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin from North Carolina, was fatally shot during the encounter. According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, Martin entered the property through the north gate while another vehicle was exiting. He was confronted by two Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy as he entered the gate.
Reportedly, Martin was carrying a gas can and a shotgun. Sheriff Bradshaw mentioned that Martin was instructed to drop the weapons, but he raised the shotgun in a shooting position, leading the authorities to fire their weapons to eliminate the threat.
It was disclosed that Martin may have acquired the shotgun while traveling south, with a box for the weapon later found in his vehicle. At this time, investigators have not determined a motive for his actions.
Efforts are underway to develop a psychological profile of Martin. Sheriff Bradshaw indicated that there is no current indication of prior involvement with law enforcement.
Residents living near Mar-a-Lago have been urged by the FBI to review any security camera footage they may have that could assist in the investigation.
In a separate development, former President Trump made remarks about being targeted in two assassination attempts in 2024. He expressed his concerns during a White House event for crime victims, stating, “I’ve got a lot of people gunning for me, don’t I?” and suggested that such attempts are directed at consequential presidents.
In North Carolina, the Moore County Sheriff’s Department reported that a relative of Martin had reported him missing early on Sunday. Martin’s cousin, Braeden Fields, mentioned that Martin rarely discussed politics, appeared fearful of guns, and belonged to a family supporting Trump.
Fields expressed shock at Martin’s actions, stating, “I wouldn’t believe he would do something like this. It’s mind-blowing. He wouldn’t even hurt an ant. He doesn’t even know how to use a gun.”
Martin resided with his mother in a simple modular house near Cameron, N.C. His family did not respond to inquiries, and the increased police presence from the previous day had dissipated.
Martin’s employment history revealed that he had been working as a groundskeeper at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club for the past three years. The club’s president, Kelly Miller, conveyed sympathy for Martin’s family, describing the incident as unexpected and tragic.
The breach at Mar-a-Lago occurred in close proximity to an incident in September 2024, where a gunman was apprehended while Trump was playing golf at a West Palm Beach club.
In a related incident, a Secret Service agent observed Ryan Routh aiming a rifle before Trump appeared at a rally, leading to Routh’s conviction and sentencing to life in prison. Another assassination attempt in July 2024 by Thomas Crooks resulted in Trump sustaining a minor injury to his ear, further energizing his supporters during the election campaign.
