Christina Black’s team made a quiet start in Montana’s Canadian Curling Trials.
They now have a shot at becoming Canada’s representatives at the Milan Cortina Olympics.
In the women’s semifinal, Black’s team from Halifax Curling Club surprised Kerri Einarson 6-3, advancing to face Rachel Homan in the women’s final.
“I don’t have the words to describe it,” Black expressed. “It was incredible.”
Later in the day, Matt Dunstone’s team from Winnipeg secured a 9-5 victory over Mike McEwen’s Saskatoon team in the men’s semifinal. Dunstone will compete against Brad Jacobs’ Calgary-based rink in the men’s final.
Black broke the 3-3 tie by scoring three points in the ninth end and then successfully defended against Einarson in the 10th.
Einarson, a four-time national champion from Gimli, Man., struggled to create offense from the beginning of the game.
“It just wasn’t our day, and unfortunately, we were outplayed,” Einarson acknowledged. “We missed a few shots and didn’t capitalize on opportunities.”
The only team from Nova Scotia in the competition, Black’s team initially suffered a 12-5 loss to Einarson but bounced back with a strong performance to secure a spot in the playoffs.
Black’s team, led by the experienced skip, won four out of the next five games to clinch a playoff spot and eventually advance to the finals.
