The news of her beloved brother Dan’s tragic murder shook her to the core. Dan fell victim to a heinous act while at work, as five individuals seeking employment on his construction project resorted to violence, leading to his untimely demise.
The harsh reality of Jamaica’s crime-ridden environment, particularly in locales like Spanish Town where her brother met his end, often exposes residents to senseless and unresolved murders. McKenzie’s personal encounters with violence, including her brother’s previous shooting incident and her husband’s armed robbery encounters, had desensitized her to the prevalent dangers. However, Dan’s murder struck a deeper chord, instilling fear for the safety of her family.
Driven by fear and seeking a safer environment, McKenzie explored pathways to Canada through work permits.
