Australia issued a warning on Monday about the potential for a wider spread of H5N1 bird flu following the first significant mortality event among seabirds, resulting in the death of around 50 greater crested terns off the southern coast of Adelaide. Although no evidence of the virus has been detected on Australian farms yet, many have implemented lockdown measures to protect their poultry flocks since the initial detection in June.
Agriculture Minister Julie Collins confirmed the presence of H5N1 bird flu through testing on a group of 49 deceased and 35 ailing terns discovered during helicopter surveillance near Cape Jaffa, approximately 250 kilometers from Adelaide, on Friday. Collins addressed reporters in Canberra, emphasizing the likelihood of more wildlife being impacted by the virus and the increasing numbers of affected animals.
With 74 confirmed cases spread across regions like Western Australia and Queensland, most incidents have been reported in South Australia, according to Collins. Both Australia and New Zealand, which experienced its first H5N1 case last month, have long prepared for the virus by enhancing biosecurity measures on farms, monitoring shorebirds, vaccinating susceptible species, and developing response strategies.
In recent years, the H5N1 virus has led to the deaths of numerous birds and mammals, resulting in substantial financial losses for poultry farmers, infections in U.S. cattle, and the presence of bird and seal carcasses on beaches. While H5N1 bird flu can infect humans through contact with infected animals, global human cases remain limited, and officials maintain that the risk to humans is low.
