“DFO Scientists Assess Lobster Stock Scenarios Off Nova Scotia”

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans scientists are examining potential scenarios regarding changes in lobster stocks off Nova Scotia and southern New Brunswick. This review includes assessing the impacts of adjustments such as shortening season lengths, modifying trap limits, changing size regulations, and other strategies.

Adam Cook, a DFO scientist and co-lead of a recent report, highlighted the importance of updating the existing lobster management measures to align with evolving scientific knowledge, particularly in light of shifting water temperatures. Despite this, Cook emphasized that lobster fisheries in Canadian waters are currently in good health, with stock status indicators generally above long-term averages.

The study’s findings will not trigger immediate changes in management measures according to the department’s statement. However, they will inform potential adjustments if industry stakeholders seek modifications or if stock status necessitates alterations.

Cook emphasized the need for a tailored approach to lobster fishing areas 27 to 38, spanning from northern Cape Breton to the Bay of Fundy, indicating that a blend of measures is typically necessary for species conservation. The study employed modeling and simulations to evaluate the impact of various management strategies, highlighting the significance of season length in reducing exploitation and incidental mortality.

Furthermore, the study underlined the limited effectiveness of minor reductions in trap limits, noting that significant changes would be required to significantly impact exploitation rates but would also have economic and operational implications. Long-term measures like v-notching, which safeguards large, egg-bearing female lobsters, were also explored as potential strategies.

Bernie Berry, a senior fisheries adviser at the Coldwater Lobster Association, emphasized the crucial role of DFO-produced information in informing industry decisions and preparing for potential environmental and fisheries management changes. He stressed that accumulating knowledge over time enhances understanding of the effects of specific harvest-control rules on fisheries.
