I’m Emily and I’m fascinated by the innovative concept of utilizing waste heat from subway stations to cool them down and potentially repurpose the heat elsewhere. We’ve explored similar initiatives involving waste heat from sources like nuclear power plants, paper mills, and sewers, so why not subways?
This week’s highlights include Canadian technology aimed at cooling hot subways in New York City, understanding how wildfires generate thunderclouds, and the crackdown on “wishcycling” in some municipalities.
Underground subway stations worldwide, including those in Canadian cities like Montreal, are experiencing increasing temperatures, prompting complaints from commuters. In response, a Toronto-based company, Cascara Energy, in partnership with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York City, is introducing an energy-efficient cooling solution in the East Broadway station. The innovative radiant cooling system, utilizing chilled water-filled pipes in ceiling arches, aims to enhance passenger comfort without traditional air conditioning components, promising higher efficiency and easier maintenance.
The system, set to be operational by the end of August with a pilot phase until the end of 2027, offers a unique approach to cooling subway stations by absorbing heat and providing a more comfortable environment for passengers. Moreover, the recovered heat could potentially be repurposed for other sustainable uses.
Subway systems accumulate heat from various sources such as passengers, electronics, and train systems. Cascara Energy’s CEO, Robert Croghan, explained their system’s dual purpose of cooling passengers and recapturing excess heat for external applications like heating water and buildings. This innovative approach not only enhances passenger comfort but also promotes energy efficiency and sustainability by repurposing waste heat effectively.
In parallel, London’s Underground system has already implemented a waste heat recovery system, demonstrating the potential for repurposing heat from subway tunnels to support district heating networks and reduce energy consumption.
As Cascara Energy’s cooling pilot project progresses in New York City, there is optimism that this technology could be replicated in other transit systems globally, including in Canada. The initiative showcases a practical and sustainable approach to addressing subway heat challenges while promoting energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.
