“Davis Cup Qualifiers: Canada to Battle Brazil in Vancouver”

Vancouver has been chosen as the venue for Canada’s initial matchup against Brazil in the Davis Cup Qualifiers, as announced by Tennis Canada on Thursday. The Davis Cup tie, consisting of five matches, is scheduled to occur on February 6-7 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre located on the University of British Columbia campus.

The victorious team will progress to the second round of qualifiers for the global men’s tennis tournament, slated for September 2026. Positioned at ninth, Canada will face off against the 18th-ranked Brazil, with Canada having secured victory in 10 out of their previous 12 home ties. The last encounter between the two nations happened in 2007 during the Group I Americas stage, where Brazil emerged triumphant with a 3-1 score.

The Canadian team has a strong record in Vancouver, having won their last three Davis Cup ties in the city, notably achieving surprising victories against Spain and Italy on their journey to the 2013 semifinals and a 3-2 win over Japan in 2015.

Following a 4-0 win against Israel in the World Group I play last September, Canada earned a spot in the 2026 tournament qualifiers. The tie took place in Halifax amidst protests regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank, with the venue being devoid of spectators.

In 2022, Canada clinched its sole Davis Cup title by defeating Australia in the final. However, subsequent losses to Germany in the 2024 quarterfinals and Hungary in the 2025 qualifying first round caused Canada to drop to the qualifying pool and then to the World Group 1 level, respectively.
